Invited Talk On Optical fiber communication

  • Topic: Optical fiber communication
  • Date: 17th February 2020
  • Time: 3PM-4PM
  • Venue: C D Sagar Auditorium, DSCE
  • Speaker: Dr. K. Srinivasan

On 17th February 2020, Department of Physics, DSCE organized an invited talk on “Optical fiber communication”. The invited talk was delivered by the eminent Professor, Dr. K. Srinivasan. Around 200 students from first year Engineering attended this invited talk and the objective of this was to give the students a good understanding of optical fiber and the power of Light in digital communication using optical fibers.

Faculty coordinator, Dr Priya A H welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. The speaker spoke about Physics behind the principles of optical fibers, modes of operation of optical fibers and the importance of optical fiber in digital communication. The speaker highlighted upon how the basic knowledge on optics can be used for technological applications. Students found this lecture as interesting and informative. Then the session was open for questions and students got better understanding on the topic with the interaction session with the speaker. Dr. C M Joseph, HOD, Physics gave the vote of thanks followed by a group photo session with the speaker.

Invited Talk On Quantum Mechanics for Engineers

  • Topic: Quantum Mechanics for Engineers
  • Date: 17th February 2018
  • Time: 3PM-4PM
  • Venue: AV auditorium, Library, DSI
  • Speaker: Dr. K. Srinivasan (Toronto, Canada)

On 17 February 2018, Department of Physics organized an invited talk on “Quantum mechanics for Engineers”. The invited talk was delivered by an eminent professor, Prof. K. Srinivasan. Around 200 students from 1st year attended this invited talk and the objective of this was to give the students a good understanding of quantum mechanics and how it can be applied in engineering.

The program started with an invocation song by two first year students, Aravind and Srihari. Physics HOD Dr. C. M. Joseph addressed the gathering and welcomed the speaker. Prof. Srinivasan started with basics of quantum mechanics and later covered topics like, “what does Physics concern with”, “how is Physics done”. He also covered major branches of physics and seven basic quantities in Physics. In the later part of his lecture, the speaker described quantum systems and covered the topic of where and how quantum mechanics enter engineering disciplines along with the preparations that would be needed for applying quantum mechanics to engineering. Students found this lecture interesting and informative.

  • Date: 7th September 2017
  • Time: 3PM-4PM
  • Venue: CD Sagar Auditorium, DSI

Department of Physics has conducted an invited talk on “Quantum Computing” to commemorate the Teachers day on 07 September 2017. The talk was given by Prof Pranesha T S from BMS College of Engineering. The talk was about Quantum Computing and gave an overview of quantum computing in an intuitive and conceptual fashion.

The talk began with an introduction to the strange world of the quantum. Concepts such as quantum superposition, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the “collapse” of the wave function and quantum entanglement (i.e., EPR pairs) were introduced.

Simple examples were given to explain and to illustrate such concepts as quantum measurement, quantum teleportation, quantum dense coding and the first quantum algorithm etc.

Talk covered the transformation of computing technology from first generation to the next generation using quantum Physics and even Photons. Current Si technology is to be replaced by reducing the size and increasing the speed using quantum computers.
